Makerere University, College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS) is the main ICT training, research and consultancy Centre in Makerere University and the region. It was established by the University Council on 1 st February 2011 through the merge of the Faculty of Computing and Informatics Technology (CIT) and the East African School of Library and Information Sciences (EASLIS).
The College has two schools with six academic Departments comprising of:
- Department of Computer Science
- Department of Networks
- Department of Information Technology and Department of Information Systems under CIT,
- Department of Records and archives and Department of Library Sciences under EASLIS.
Beside the academic Departments, the College runs a Center for Innovations and Professional Skills Development (CiPSD), through which the College addresses various industrial challenges like skills development, incubation of new ideas and nurturing of new technology-based business. This is where the Cisco Networking Regional Academy is hosted. The College’s vision is to be a Centre of academic excellence, spearheading research, service and national development in Computing and Information Sciences and to provide first class training and consultancy services through its established units. Our mission is to provide expert teaching and research in the field of Computing and Information Sciences for national development in Uganda in concert with international developments. CiPSD delivers state-of-art training in computing program like:
Cisco Networking Academy for Cisco related courses, Microsoft IT Academy Program for Microsoft related courses, Digital security, Office productivity like International Computer Driving License course, Oracle Certified Training centre for Oracle and GIS Training centre among others.
The Center is also an authorized Test Center host location for Pearson VUE, Prometric, ICDL and Krytarion.
CiPSD’s strategy is to offer training that is responsive to the needs of society. This is achieved through tailoring courses towards what the industry lacks as skills in the employed staff. The Center has been at the forefront to assist government and other organizations to build human capacity in various ICT skills. CiPSD has the capacity to enrol 5000 students per annum on its massive labs housed on 6-floor building with 3000 computers.
