Microsoft Imagine Cup: Makerere students develop new malaria testing application

Uganda will be represented in the Microsoft Imagine Cup competitions worldwide finals by a team of three students from Makerere University who developed an application that can diagnose malaria without pricking any body part.

Team Code 8 is made up of Businge Joshua, Gitta Brian (both first year Computer Science students), Simon Lubambo, a fourth year Electrical Engineering student and their mentor Josiah Kavuma a third year Information Technology student.

Their application named Matibabu uses a light sensor connected to a tablet that is passed over a finger to diagnose malaria. The trio will represent Uganda in the 2013 Microsoft Imagine Cup finals to be held in St. Petersburg, Russia in July.

“To have won this year’s Uganda country finals – and to have an opportunity to present our country at the Worldwide Imagine Cup along with some of the brightest young minds, is an honour,” said the team. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to compete with students from around the globe who like us, are passionate about making a difference in the world.”

Team Code 8 won an all expenses paid trip to the finals and two laptops while the second team – Team KodeDream won two laptops courtesy of Microsoft.

Speaking during the competition that attracted over 150 students, Simon Onyango, the Microsoft Business Development Manager in Uganda, challenged the youth to take time to focus on developing technology applications that are wealth creating and not just “cool”. “ While many local developers have focused their work on developing consumer applications, it is important that they also look into opportunities that exist in B2C (Business to Consumer) Apps, Independent Software Vendors (ISV), Line of Business Apps and In House Line of Business Apps as these remain unexplored and present real business opportunities,” he added.

Onyango also encouraged the youth to continue developing apps on the Windows 8 platform saying it is only a game changer but also an operating system that is apps driven. “Windows 8, unlike past operating systems offers a huge global opportunity for developers. They can easily build, submit and sell through the windows store with favorable economic terms. There is no learning curve as local developers can use their existing skills, code, certifications, languages and framework preferences to write for windows.”

Drake Patrick Mirembe, the manager of Microsoft Innovation Centre-Uganda (MIC) noted that the MIC was committed to mentoring the teams that had participated in the competition to enable them transform their concepts into innovations that uplift our communities.

This is the first time the finals are jointly held in Uganda by Microsoft, Makerere University and the MIC-Uganda.

The Center for Innovations and Professional Skills Development (CiPSD) has been awarded $50,000 (over sh130m) from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to support its Incubation initiatives aimed at developing mobile applications that address the social/economic development needs of underserved communities in Uganda.

The Center, hosted at the College of Computing and Information Sciences, Makerere University will provide incubation support to nurture businesses that will commercialize new products and services for which proof-of-concept has been demonstrated. The products include recent research and software innovations within CiPSD and the College as well as concepts developed in the College’s Software Business Incubation programme.

Some of the proposed products include: a mobile valley dam water-level monitoring and query application, a mobile application for crop disease surveillance, a mobile tourism directory and reservation application, an SMS and location based auction system that matches commodity crop traders, brokers and small producers, assuring best prices to buyers and sellers without allowing either side to manipulate the market, a national call centre hot-line application for emergency medical directions and advice, and an online coursework tutorial and examination pre-testing system for secondary school and university students.CiPSD wins $50,000 to support business incubation

The funds will also be used to support the operations and expansion of the Center’s Software Business Incubation (SBI) programme. This programme has operated with practices proven in the venture capital industry. In the past, it has lacked funds to incubate its most promising entrepreneur groups but with the support from UCC it has the potential to expand its scope and impact while ensuring a sustainable supply of new ICT innovations to incubate in future years.

A total of 275 students who enrolled for courses offered by Amity University of India have graduated. This is the second cohort of students receiving masters, bachelors and post graduate diplomas after participating in tele-education courses offered through the Pan-African E-Network project hosted by the College of Computing and Information Sciences, Makerere University.

Addressing the congregation, the representative of the Indian High Commissioner said the Indian government will set up three educational hubs in Uganda to serve the East African Region. These hubs which will include the India-Africa Institute of foreign trade, a food processing incubation centre and the Makerere Testing Laboratory are aimed at helping the locals acquire development skills. “As India, we cherish teaching people how to fish rather than giving them fish,” he added.

Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda, the Minister for ICT thanked the Government of India for its continued commitment in supporting development projects in Uganda, adding that: “Uganda being an agricultural state needs to improve its capabilities and this can be done by providing skills development to people on foreign trade as well as value addition to agricultural products.”

He noted that his ministry was reviewing the National ICT policy framework which provides for an e-learning strategy that will help streamline and promote e-education.

The Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. John Ddumba Ssentamu, said other tele-education facilities would be availed within the university after it received a grant from the African Development Bank which shall be used to construct multidisciplinary laboratories. Ddumba who was represented by Prof. J.Y.T Mugisha appealed to the Ministry of ICT to continue implementing initiatives aimed at expanding the availability of low-cost bandwidth within the country. “I am confident that with such facilities in place, our teaching and learning environment as well as research output will greatly improve,” he added.

Six students received medals for excellent academic performance in their different courses. For the Bachelor of Science in IT, Morris Ojok took gold while Justine Katwesige and Augustine Kisitu won the silver and bronze respectively. For the Master of Financial Management, Paul Ssenyonjo won a gold medal while Alice Nabisubi and Moses Ssimbwa took silver and bronze respectively.

ULIA trains members on curriculum design and review

E-mail Print PDF

Members of Library and Information Associations from Uganda and Tanzania recently participated in a two-day workshop aimed at empowering them with skills to design and review curricula for Library and Information Science (LIS) courses. “We noted that most LIS professional leaders were not well conversant with issues to do with curriculum design and review, so we organized this training to share these skills with them,” said Assoc. Prof. Constant Okello Obura, the President of the Uganda Library and Information Association (ULIA).

Assoc. Prof. Obura, who is also the dean of the East African School of Library and Information Sciences (EASLIS), said ULIA would soon expand the training to cater for all library associations within the East African region. He added that the training will go a long way in improving the quality of LIS graduates since members of the associations are often tasked with quality assurance of the LIS education.
The workshop, organized by ULIA, in conjunction with the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP) and EASLIS was attended by over 10 participants.

The members noted that the training would significantly improve their work and improve quality of LIS education since they are often called upon to participate in curriculum design and review workshops. They also agreed to share the skills with other members in their respective associations
The training, facilitated by Dr. Betty Akullu Ezati and Dr. Charles Opolot Okurut from Makerere University also provided a forum for leaders of LIS training institutions and LIS associations to define a strategy of how to work together for the benefit of LIS training in the region.
The members also agreed to lobby the government to support the School Library Policy in order to improve literacy in the schools.
