Principal's Message

Welcome to the College of Computing and Information Science (CoCIS). I want to take this opportunity to thank CoCIS staff, faculty, and students for all you to do to keep our college moving forward to meet our strategic goals. Achieving academic success should be an intentional outcome of our research and educational activities.

CoCIS is the leading computing, library, and information science institution for ICT research and innovations in Africa. Novel research is conducted by our top notch faculty in five areas of excellence: 1) artificial intelligence and data science; 2) software systems; 3) networked systems and systems security; 4) impact of digital technology on records management in libraries, museums, and archives; and 5) learning, policy, and information-seeking behavior in health, agriculture, and finance.

As college principal, I am really impressed with the impeccable education programs our staff and faculty provide to our students and at-large community. We have very strong undergraduate programs running in our two schools (the School of Computing and Informatics Technology and East African School of Library and Information Science). We pride ourselves in offering three flagships undergraduate educational programs in Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor of Information Systems and Technology, and Bachelor of Library and Information Science. Our programs continue to attract exceptional talent. The top 10% of our students in the nation enroll into our flagship undergraduate programs.

CoCIS offers a wide range of courses at Bachelor, Masters, and PhD levels, including certificates in professional skill development courses. Our courses are designed to enable our students gain comprehensive practical, multidisciplinary skills, and undertake innovative research that meets the current demands of the society. As a college, we aspire to attain cutting-edge technology and specialized labs, coupled with highly-skilled and talented full-time staff that maximize their potential in teaching and research to equip our students with the most sought after professional skills, making them very competitive in the marketplace. The practicability of our courses positions our students to become leaders and entrepreneurs in various professions instead of being job-seekers.

An outstanding college vision was set by the founding academic fathers of CoCIS, we are truly inspired by their optimistic attitude and farsightedness. Now is the time to focus on realizing this vision and be a global leader, they wanted us to be, in Computing and Information Sciences Education, Research, and Services. Measurable, meaningful, and impactful scientific and social contributions will positively validate this vision. Our college students, staff, and faculty should be mindful and determined, and must be focused on delivering our mandate and accomplishing strategic goals.

The principal aim of our mandate is to conduct high-quality research and educate the next cadre of leaders, entrepreneurs, teachers, skilled labor force, digital innovators, wealth creators, and young scientists.
