Makerere University, College of Computing and Information Sciences (COCIS) runs a number of short term training popularly referred to as “short courses” hence department of Professional skills and Development. The Department of Professional skills and Development is one of the newly created departments in the College of Computing and Information Sciences. Its foremost ambition is to engage students in ICT practical courses and administer high quality teaching and learning process.

As ICT technologies bring new economic and social opportunities to communities throughout the world, businesses, nonprofits, hospitals, schools, and government organizations are experiencing growing demand for IT professionals to design, build, maintain, and secure their systems. The professional skills development department aims to equip individuals with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to help meet this demand in a variety of industries ranging from computer applications, computer repair and maintenance, databases to networking technologies. The courses are designed to help students prepare for entry-level career opportunities, continuing education, and globally recognized certifications. Each course is supported by classroom instruction, hands-on labs, and interactive learning tools to help students succeed.

PSD Training Labs: At COCIS, training is provided in the proper care, maintenance, and use of proper software tools, standards-based high-quality content in specially equipped labs with modern equipment, where students practice hands-on exercises to apply the concepts they learn. COCIS has state of the art Lab equipments to support Laboratory practicals for all the courses. The Labs help students carry out individual study and practice with simulators, equipment as well as, carry out end of course projects.
